I had some plans for what I wanted to do today. You know, just regular stuff like laundry, organizing closets and drawers and some dusting. But my back decided not to cooperate, so I decided to take advantage of the downtime and work on a blog post. This post may be not one particular subject, but rather an amalgam of different things that we can do, both large and small to shine a light in our sometimes crazy, scary world.
Are you familiar with Guideposts magazine? Guideposts (https://www.guideposts.org) is well-named as it keeps its readers on a positive path to personal growth and loving service. Guideposts is great for personal reading and gift-giving and they also have a Military Appreciation Program. You can make a one-time gift of $10 or more, or a monthly gift of $5 or more and Guideposts will send their publication to our men and women serving in the armed forces. This is a nice way to send an encouraging word to those who are facing danger far from home.
Many times I wished that I would have gone into teaching. I really like sharing knowledge and motivating people. Whenever I get my Heifer catalog I really wish I were a teacher so that I could start a Heifer Read to Feed program. https://www.heifer.org/readtofeed Through this program the students get sponsors who will donate money to this drive for every book or page read by the student. This is a two-in-one benefit. The student gets increased reading skills and a family in need gets a hand up. Heifer is perhaps one of my favorite causes. Through Heifer you donate funds to supply families and communities with a farm animal, bees, tree seedlings or even stoves. Heifer works with the recipient so that they get the maximum help from this gift, and they pledge to pass on the gift, which they give one of the animal’s offspring to another family, so the gift keeps on giving and giving.
If you’ve ever shopped in a grocery store (and who hasn’t?), you have undoubtedly seen Newman’s Own products (www.newmansown.com). For those of you too young to remember, Paul Newman was a world-renowned actor. He was one of Hollywood’s top leading men when I was growing up. I remember the first time I saw his salad dressing in the store. I thought, “Doesn’t this guy have enough money?” Well that goes to show what I know. 100% of all profits and royalties from Newman’s Own products are donated to charity. To date, more than $350 million has been donated to charities around the world. Newman’s Own started with salad dressings and now has spaghetti sauce, frozen pizza, BBQ sauce, salsa, snacks, candy and nuts, just to name a few of the products sold. I haven’t tried all the products, but I can tell you that what I have tried has been good. The company tries to sell a quality product for the common good. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp founded by Newman provides a place for kids with life-threatening diseases to have a vacation with other kids and forget about their conditions for a while. Newman’s Own gives all of us an opportunity to do good all over the world by just enjoying a pizza or salad.
Bye for now,
“It starts with you. in the end, God simply calls you to be faithful to the things He has given you to do. He doesn’t require you to be a superstar, just faithful and obedient.” World Vision President Richard Stearns – The Hole in Our Gospel
