Paradise

Are you familiar with the Phil Collins song from the 1980’s , “Another Day in Paradise”?  Here are the lyrics:

She calls out to the man on the street
‘Sir, can you help me?
It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?’

He walks on, doesn’t look back
He pretends he can’t hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it’s another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, ’cause it’s just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she’s been crying
She’s got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can’t walk but she’s trying

Oh think twice, ’cause it’s another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it’s just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it

Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she’s been there
Probably been moved on from every place
‘Cause she didn’t fit in there

Oh think twice, ’cause another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it’s just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, just think about it, think about it

It’s just another day for you and me in paradise
It’s just another day for you and me in paradise, paradise
Just think about it, paradise, just think about it
Paradise, paradise, paradise

I strongly urge you to look up the video on YouTube.  It is a powerful commentary on the state of our world.  I bring this up because we are coming to a difficult time of the year for the poor.  We are on the threshold of Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.  This would be the perfect time to share our bounty with those who have so much less.

A number of charitable organizations are having food drives to provide holiday meals to those who would not otherwise be able to afford them.  In this area, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is conducting their Holiday Turkey Drive from November 2 to December 19, 2015.  They are hoping to collect 5,000 frozen turkeys and all the fixins’ for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Their most needed items are:  frozen turkeys, canned fruits, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, instant stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, canned or dry gravy, canned pie filling and boxed dessert mixes.  Gift cards and cash will also be gratefully accepted.  For more information, go to centralpafoodbank.org.  If you don’t live in the Central Pennsylvania area, most charitable organizations, food banks and soup kitchens are in need of donations.

This Saturday the Boy Scouts will be having their Scouting for Food drive.  Fliers were distributed on doorknobs last week.  All they ask is that you put nonperishable food in a grocery bag and set it outside your house by 9 am.  They collect the food and take it to the food bank for you.

I can’t solve all the world’s problems or feed all the world’s hungry; I doubt that any of us can.  But, I can supply a meal and spread the word.  And you can supply a meal and spread the word.  And so on and so on.  Our combined efforts can make a huge difference.  We can take the first steps in making the world a better place, for all of us.

Till the next time,

Cindy

Rumi, a thirteenth-century Persian mystic, told of a man who walked past a beggar and asked, “Why, God, do you not do something for these people?”  God replied, “I did do something, I made you.”
